Miscellaneous II

One of the things we like to do back in Arkansas is to cook outside on the grill.  We did not have a BBQ here in the condo complex that we could use.  It was quite a challenge but we finally found one.  We also got a turkey roasting pan to use as a lid (Thanks to Lynne Reilly for the idea) and it works pretty good.  We have had fish, chicken, and even hamburgers.

There is a “fast food” restaurant/bar here called Panda’s.   They came up with a banner for the front of their restaurant to get the attention of the kids on spring break.  I really think they got it right, although I don’t believe it was intentional.

Most of the kids here on spring break are probably broke.

One really neat thing here is that you can buy rum and coke in a can.  It’s just like a can of coke except it has rum in it.

The money here is not made of paper.  Several years ago the Costa Rica government changed out all of the paper money for plastic.  It is stronger, lasts longer, and is cleaner.  It is more colorful to.

In this picture, the paper money is worth $2 and the coin is worth a dollar.

The Howler monkeys are quite common here.  They seldom leave the trees so they people have built “Monkey Bridges” for them to cross the roads.

There is a new casino on the street along the beach.  It is part of the Daria Hotel and Convention Center.   This is a really nice complex but I don’t think the Casino has caught on yet.  I have never seen more than three or four people in there at a time.  Maybe I just haven’t been there at the right time.

There is one building here that seems to be out of character.  It is a high rise that has commercial and residential space.  It even has a parking garage underneath

There is a dramatic change in the beach at high tide versus low tide.  The water can vary more than nine feet from one to the other.
High Tide

Low Tide

There is a monthly magazine here called The Howler  and a weekly newspaper called the Tico Times.  Both are in English and have wonderful information about the area.

The winds have been blowing hard the last couple weeks.  To compound that, there have been fires burning the last several days.  Between the two, we have had a very smoky time of it.   Hopefully, the wind will change and the fires will burn out.

The children here are beautiful---

And very athletic.

She was cool!!!!
